Destruction and Preservation in Ancient and Modern Times" will take place in Turin. At banquet with the heroes

At banquet with the heroes

The book "At banquet with the heroes. The ivory furniture from the Square House in Parthian Nisa", by N. Manassero (with contributions by G. Affanni and C. Lippolis), has been published: born from the research project funded by the Shelby White & Leon Levy Foundation in 2012, it is the publication of a group of ivories from the Parthian period, found during the Sovietic excavations of the late 1940s in Old Nisa (now Turkmenistan). These are legs chairs, thrones, furniture or beds, with dimensions ranging from 5 to 70 cm in length, mainly worked on the lathe, almost completely devoid of figured decorations. Already known to the scientific community for over 60 years, but never adequately published (a single short article in Russian, dated to 1962, had little circulation outside the Russian-speaking countries), these materials now bring new hints for thought on their context of use on Arsacid ideology.

Sixth Italian archaeological mission at Tulul al-Baqarat (MAITaB)

Sixth Italian archaeological mission at Tulul al-Baqarat (MAITaB)

Sixth campaign (March 27-April 23, 2018)

A new season of archaeological works is being launched at Tulul al-Baqarat by the team of the Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino. The stratigraphic investigations are planned on the main mound of the area, TB1, where new soundings will be opened in the area of the sacred enclosure, and on the most ancient mound at Baqarat, TB7, where the analyses of the residential area in the north-western sector of the tell and of the central relief, identified as a terrace supporting official buildings, will continue.

"Anche le Statue Muoiono"

"Anche le statue Muoiono. Conflitto e patrimonio tra antico e contemporaneo" March 09 - September 09, 2018.

The exhibition is held in three different locations, Museo Egizio, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Musei Reali. Within this exhibition Egyptian, Cypriot, Greek and Roman artefacts, which have been intentionally damaged or reworked, both in ancient and recent times, sometimes for commercial purposes, are collected and displayed. The exhibit, moreover, features works by contemporary artists, mainly Egyptian and Middle Eastern, inspired by the systematic destruction of the cultural heritage realized by Isis-Daesh in Syria and Iraq. These works aim at the same time at suggesting a reflection on the role of museums. The Centro Ricerche Archeologiche e Scavi di Torino presents within this exhibition pictures of Assyrian reliefs from the Palace of Sennacherib at Nineveh (Museo Egizio), a video about the Iraq Museum at Baghdad (Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo) and a video about the current project of excavations organized and funded by CRAST at Tulul al Baqarat in Southern Mesopotamia (Musei Reali).

Inauguration March 8, 2018 Museo Egizio 06.00 p.m. - Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Musei Reali 07.00 p.m.

Fifth Italian archaeological mission at Tulul al Baqarat (MAITaB)

Fifth Italian archaeological mission at Tulul al Baqarat (MAITaB)

Fifth campaign (September 22 - November 14, 2017)

The archaeological field activities focused on the two main mounds of the area. On TB1 two soundings have been opened on the eastern side of the temenos of the sacred complex, around the northern sector of the tell. To the side the Neo-Babylonian temple, an additional sounding detected the presence of a brick-flooring (most likely the top of the terrace) dated to the Early-Dynastic period. In this area, unfortunately, the structures have been long exposed and, therefore, strongly eroded by atmospheric agents; they have been also cut by the successive Neo-Babylonian reconstruction. On TB7, the sounding which brought to light a farmhouse on the north-western sector of the site has been enlarged. The limits of the building are not yet identified on the northern, eastern and southern sides, while on the western side an opened area with ovens and tannurs (an external production area) could represent a limit of this rather extended building. The dating of this complex is still to be pinpointed in detail, but, approximately, it could be positioned between the Jemdet-Nasr and the Early-Dynastic I-II periods. During the 2017 expedition, training courses that involved 22 Iraqi students and SBAH officials within the European Projects (Europe-Aid) EDUU - led by the University of Bologna and of which CRAST is a partner from this year - have been fulfilled. The training activities included excavations, surveys and cataloging/documentation practises on the field at Tulul al Baqarat (during the morning lessons) and a series of workshops (for example seminars, pottery drawings practises) held in the house of the expedion in Noumaniya.
